Three Ingredients for Relationships That Go the Distance Part 2
Philippians 2:3-5 KJV – “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.”
Ephesians 5:21 KJV – “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.”
The posture is mutual submission. Faith is what gives us the security and strength to live it.
Faith Gives Me The Security To Put Somebody Else First
Philippians 2:3-5 KJV – “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.”
When I trust God as my source, I do not have to fight for position, recognition, or control. I can consider another person’s needs because I trust God to take care of mine.
“QUOTE” – “When I know God has me, I don’t have to fight everybody to make sure I get mine.”
Faith Changes The Question
Galatians 6:2 KJV – “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the laws of Christ.”
Move from “What are you doing for me?” to “What can I do to help?” Faith filled relationships do not simply keep score; they look for opportunities to carry burdens and serve.
“QUOTE” – “Faith doesn’t just believe God can carry my burdens. Mature faith helps somebody else carry theirs.”
Faith Allows Me To Surrender My Need To Always Be Right
Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV – “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Sometimes the obstacle in a relationship is not a lack of love but the need to win. You can win the argument and damage the relationship. Trusting God allows me to value the person more than proving my point.”
“QUOTE” – “I don’t have to win every argument when I’ve trusted God with the outcome.”
Faith Changes How I Treat People – Even When They Aren’t Treating Me Right
Romans 12:17-18 KJV – “Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.”
My response should reflect Christ, not merely the behavior I receive from others. This does not require remaining in an abusive or dangerous relationship, healthy boundaries can coexist with Christlike character.
“QUOTE” – “Their behavior doesn’t get to determine my character.”
Faith Moment: Sow What You Want To Receive
Galatians 6:7 KJV – “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”
Want honor? Sow honor. Want encouragement? Sow encouragement. Want patience? Practice patience. Want grace? Give grace.
“QUOTE” – “Stop waiting for the relationship to change before you change what you’re bringing to the relationship.”
Marriage Connection
Ephesians 5:25 KJV – “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.”
Mutual submission is not simply an idea; it becomes sacrificial action. Christ is the model: love moves first, serves, and gives.
Closing Application
Return to the central question: WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP? Ask it in marriage, with your children, with aging parents, at work, in church, and whenever someone is carrying a burden.
Faith Declarations
Because I trust God, I don’t have to come first
Because I trust God, I can serve without keeping score
Because I trust God, I can honor people even when it’s difficult
“QUOTE” – “When my faith changes my posture, my posture changes my relationships.”
Final Question: What Can I Do To Help?
